Description:

Finances within your social enterprise are not only about preparing budgets and crunching numbers, but about communicating what those numbers mean to your  various stakeholders including: investors, funders, community partners, your team, your clients, and more.

The third workshop in the"Finance is Sexy" workshop series - Presenting Finances to Your Stakeholders - will help you learn the lingo and formats (i.e. income statements, balance sheets, statement of cash flows) you need to know in order to look professional when preparing and presenting your financial statements to your stakeholders.

In this workshop, you will be introduced to basic accounting terms and concepts and gain an understanding of the content and purpose of three main financial statements:

  • income statements 
  • balance sheets 
  • statement of cash flows

This part of the workshop will be facilitated by Eli Brenner, a Chartered Accountant at Meyers Norris Penny LLP.  Eli Brenner has several years of experience providing financial, accounting and business advice to private and public corporations and not-for-profit organizations. Eli holds a bachelor in business administration from Schulich School of Business and is a chartered accountant and member of the Ontario Institute of Chartered Accountants. 

In this workshop, you will also have the opportunity to apply these concepts to the finances of your own organization or business.  In the second part of the workshop, you will have the chance to sit with various professional, including Norm Tasevski, a consultant with Aperio, and Tim Harris, a serial entrepreneur, in small groups and look more closely at presenting your finances:

  • in the form of grants
  • to investors
  • to the general public
  • to your team

Norm Tasevski is a Management Consultant with Aperio. At Aperio, Norm helps individual social entrepreneurs and established organizations to crystallize and implement innovative ideas for creating social change. Prior to joining Aperio, he was the Managing Director of York Consulting Group, and prior to that was a Senior Policy Analyst with the provincial Ministry of Community and Social Services.  Norm also teaches a coures on Social Entrepreneurism at the Schulich School of Business.

Tim Harris is the founder of Star Return, a mobile technology company which allows users to obtain and exchange information about people, place and businesses.  He is a frequent speaker on Information Systems and start-ups at Carleton University and has previously taught technology at Algonquin College. He has previously restructured websites such as Couchsurfing.com to grow its membership from 10,000 members to over 1 million members in less than 12 months.

- People between the ages of 17-30 who are responsible for finances in your organization or business as well as those without a background in finances and want to learn how to prepare financial statements and communicate these to your stakeholders
